Onions and other aromatics including leeks, scallions, shallots, garlic, and wild ramps and daylilies (more about these in our “wilds” section) are available year-round from Zone 7. Leeks are available from April through February and storage onions are available from July through May, with beautiful spring onions – nickel-sized white bulbs with green tops – filling the gap from May through June. Fresh onions like red torpedo onions and walla walla sweet onions are highlights of the Zone 7 summer. Garlic comes in many forms – first as scapes and green garlic appearing in late May and slowly evolving into cured garlic, which lasts through the winter. Look for red and yellow Cipollini onions in late summer and shallots from late summer through March.
